The Word, The Truth and The Light

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

One of the basic principles of the Christian faith is found in John 17:17 when Jesus says in His prayer to His Father, “Your word is truth.” Then in Psalm 119:105 the prophet David says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” This is no literal light that we would see with our eyes, but a light that shines into the soul and illuminates the dark recesses of the mind. It is a light that if not eclipsed or veiled by pride of opinion will brighten the mind and life as if transported to another level or realm of existence. Those who haven’t experienced it yet can’t understand what this means until they do.

Those who embrace this light and truth are like those of whom the apostle Paul spoke when he said “You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness.” (1 Thessalonians 5:5) These sons and daughters of light are eager to embrace the conviction found in Isaiah 8:20 where it says “To the law and to the testimony if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” That is to say that anyone who doesn’t teach in harmony with the “Law” of Moses as well as the “testimony” of the prophets which give witness to and affirm that Law, doesn’t have light or truth in them. They are children of darkness.

The children of light have a great advantage in being able to know what is light and truth and what is not. Get a Bible and begin to read it and see if you don’t find truth and light. Just don’t let pride of opinion eclipse the light from coming into your soul.

Light and Darkness

yin-yang.jpg For the Christian one of the most dramatic symbols or images of truth is light. To my knowledge darkness has never been used as a symbol for truth. At best some have tried to see darkness as equal to light. This is illustrated by the Chinese concept of the yen and yang. According to that idea darkness and light are two mutually complementary entities that need and will continue to need each other to exist eternally. Apply that to truth and and error and it’s like saying that truth and lies will always coexist and in fact need each other to exist.

One reason I can’t accept that philosophical idea is because that isn’t how light and darkness really are in the natural world. In nature light always has the predominance. In fact darkness is nothing but the absence of light. Darkness doesn’t come from anywhere to dispel light. There is no such thing as a dark bulb. There are no beams of darkness coming from some “dark” source “shining” into the light. You might block light waves with a solid object but the darkness is still only caused by a diminishing of or the absence of light.

Secondly darkness is not equally powerful in it’s balance of push against light but is helplessly subject to light’s invasion. You could put it this way, light is not the least bit intimidated by darkness but is complete master of it whenever it sees fit.

Like light, for the Christian, truth is not dependent on lies for it’s existence. Truth is truth and error will just have to get used to it. Just like the dark will have to get used to it when the light decides to shine. Jesus said “But he who does the truth comes to the light.” (John 3:21)

Symbols of Truth

Monday, June 4th, 2007

The desire to believe we have the “truth” exists all around us.  At the very core of the human quest for knowledge is the desire for truth. Throughout time and culture there have been different words as well as  images drawn upon by mankind to illustrate or represent “truth”.

For instance “Light” itself as an element has often been used as an analogy for truth, as opposed to darkness which has often represented error, the perfect opposite of truth.  When we find truth we often speak of ourselves as enlightened.

When it comes to mere words “Actuality” is a word that to me represents that which is true.  This is similar to “Reality” which speaks of that which is “real”.  That which is real is true and actual.  We could also speak of “facts ” - a word which also represents that which really is.  We often speak of that which is “right” whether it be with reference to philosophy, behavior, or facts.  Whatever is right is true.

The fact that languages of all cultures have developed words or symbols to represent “truth” is an indication to me of the basic desire and need of our very natures to know and identify truth.  It’s built within us.  The natural desire of people to identify what is true and real exists all around us.

Here at Glorious Truth I will periodically use some of these common words and images as I speak about my search for truth.  I would like to know what symbols and words you use when you speak of truth.
